There is considerable debate on what creativity and innovation really is, and how it is practiced. To be creative or innovative can be described as being original, expressive, inventive, imaginative, ground-breaking, or someone who generates ideas. However, all of these labels are relative. We can only truly be creative if we have a different perspective from others, usually in familiar situations where most people think in a similar way. In this sense, creativity isn't just for creative types. Any individual in the right circumstances can exhibit it, just by having a new or different view.

We all have the opportunity to translate our unique personal perspectives and views of the world into new ideas and concepts that might be useful to ourselves, and others. We can help other people to think beyond their existing mental boundaries or provide fresh insights that can take their thinking to entirely new planes, creating opportunities previously hidden from them. Because everyone is capable of engaging in creative and innovative behavior, the skills or competencies necessary to do this are common to every person, in varying degrees.

Extensive research has shown that there are seven categories that contribute to effective creativity and innovation. These are:
1. Creative consciousness
2. Levels of curiosity
3. Pattern-breaking skills
4. Idea-nurturing ability
5. Willingness to experiment and take risks
6. Courage and resilience levels
7. Energetic persistence

This competency-based questionnaire has been designed to help you understand more about your relative skills or abilities in each of these critical areas, and give you a picture of your overall ability to demonstrate creativity and innovation. This will help you determine where to target your development activities in order to improve your skills.

Although primarily intended as a self-assessment, the questions have been worded so this tool can also be used for 180 or 360-degree feedback (by purchasing extra copies of this booklet - one for each respondent).
